CST300 Module 3

Part 1: The main area I know I need to improve in for studying is time management. One of the tips that the supplied study tips source runs over is to learn to prioritize different tasks throughout the day so that important tasks are done first, or that all high-priority tasks eventually get completed during the day. I plan to follow this tip by first making a list of all the tasks that I see myself having throughout any specific day and then ranking them based on how important I feel they are. Beyond this, I will also try to list the time I believe it would take to finish them so that I could accurately plan out my day with time slots for each task that are generally adequate for any task.

Part 2: Ethics is a concept of right and wrong. There are multiple ethical frameworks that can be applied to different ethical situations or ideas which reflect how that situation is being looked at critically and therefore how the decision on right and wrong is made. An example of a framework is utilitarianism, where a situation is looked at based on how much its hurts or doesn't hurt people as a whole. There are countless ethical scenarios in every aspect of life -- but a category that is on the rise are ethical scenarios in regard to technology. Some of these scenarios cover issues such as the continued battle of privacy in the digital world and the concept of digital ownership.

Part 3: My main takeaway from the supplied "What a computer science major needs to know" article is that our overall learning goals should be geared towards proving we have the skills our major claims to teach us through building a portfolio of projects. These projects ideally mesh together the numerous skills that we might be expected to know in a day-to-day work environment -- which ranges from multiple programming disciplines to understanding popular operating systems.

Part 4: The code of integrity is important for myself and for other students in this program so that the knowledge and skills that are demonstrated by the projects we turn in for each assignment accurately represent the knowledge and skill we alone possess -- in contrast to not understanding the material and just turning in the work of another person. Sticking to this code of integrity allows us to prioritize gaining the most we can from the material in order to help us in any future work environment where those skills are vital.

  1. Hi Chris!

I agree that it is important to have your work scheduled out. I personally complete the easier tasks first, though everyone has their own method. Usually by the time I finish the “difficult” task for the day I am mentally exhausted, which makes it difficult to find the motivation to do any more work. If you ever find yourself burning out, consider switching the order in which you do the assignments.

  2. Hi Chris,
I think that time management is something that a lot of us struggle with, I know I do. I agree with you that ranking tasks with regard to priority at the beginning of the day will help provide structure and ensure that high priority tasks get done. Another tip that helps me out it to break tasks up into smaller subtasks, this helps me stay motivated as I work through the subtasks to complete the larger goal.
